Nearly one in five Canadians working on weekends, according to new study.

The research from the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University shows:

  • Nearly 20 percent of Canadians work on weekends, mostly in the service sector and in part-time, temporary or seasonal jobs.
  • Because more women work in part-time and temporary jobs, most weekend workers are female.
  • Between 1991 and 1999, the percentage of people working on the weekends increased from 11 per cent to 18.5 per cent.
  • Only 62 per cent of Canadians work from 9 to 5, Monday to Friday.

The study is included in the book Decent Working Time: New Trends, New Issues and is available for purchase at: http://www.brookings.edu/press/books/clientpr/ilo/decentworkingtime.htm
